Tips to Turn Men’s Health Month Into a Lifestyle
What word comes to mind when you think of the characteristics of men? Strong? Probably, yes. But even though men are strong, that doesn’t mean that they are healthy.
This Men’s Health Month it is more important than ever for men to ensure that they are practicing the proper diet and exercise.
Follow these tips for a month and maintain a healthy lifestyle forever.
Get Up and Move
Excuses get in the way; after a long day at work all you want to do when you get home is put your feet up. But why put your feet up when you have been sitting all day already? 86% of Americans with full time jobs sit all day at work. (Source) When you get home, it is not the time to sit, it is the time to move. Adults need two and a half hours of mid intensity aerobic exercise a week- that’s only 20 minutes a day, and muscle strengthening activities two or more days a week. (Source)
We all have cravings whether that is pizza, candy, or burgers, but eating healthy is key to a healthy and happy lifestyle. You need to fuel your muscles, brain, and heart with the proper nutrition that it craves. Indulging in a craving sporadically is okay, but don’t give into them every time. For a heart healthy diet, eat less saturated and trans fat like fatty meats, fried foods, cakes and cookies, cut down on sodium, and eat more fiber, such as vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Get Enough Sleep
Sometimes it feels like there aren’t enough hours in the day so you work through the night, but that’s not doing your body or your mind any good. Adults need 7-9 hours of sleep every night. Poor sleeping habits can result in diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and depression. (Source)
Limit Tobacco and Alcohol Use
Even if you have been smoking cigarettes for twenty years, it’s not too late to quit. Quitting smoking has immediate long-term benefits to your health such as reducing the risk of heart disease, cancer, lung disease, and more. (Source) Alcohol consumption is best when done in moderation, like drinking with your friends on game nights or for a special occasion. For men this means no more than two drinks a day. (Source)
